Winter Backcountry Skiing

Information for Big Sky, Montana

  • The Weather in Big Sky is unpredictable - be prepared for the worst!

  • There are no accurate figures for Big Sky's climate, Click here for Bozeman's and West Yellowstone's climatic statistics. Keep in mind that Big Sky's temperatures fall somewhere in between the two, but if you are headed into the high country it is usually colder with higher levels of precipitation in most months.

  • Always bring extra food and clothing. In short - prepare for the worst.

  • Carry an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe - take the time to learn how to use them!

  • Back country skiers should check the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center web site or call 406-587-6981 for the latest avalanche conditions on a daily basis.

  • Below are some areas where we like to backcountry ski. Conditions can change quickly, so please don't get mad at us if it isn't the same when you go there. Help us keep this information up to date - let us know how your skiing experience was.
